The Los Angeles Business Council issued the following statement today regarding federal immigration enforcement actions in Los Angeles:
Los Angeles draws strength and dynamism from the diversity of our people. Immigrants from more than 140 countries propel our economic development, playing indispensable roles in every imaginable business and industry across L.A. County. We are also the United States’ leading economic gateway to the world.
The immigration raids are disrupting lives, livelihoods, and communities – as well as this crucial economic engine that supports our region and the nation. While the LABC supports the enforcement of U.S. law regarding undocumented immigrants who are engaged in serious criminal activity, we stand with Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom in denouncing the harsh, indiscriminate manner in which the raids are being conducted and any denial of due process for those detained.
We Angelenos have an opportunity to set the example. The LABC supports the public’s right to oppose the federal government’s enforcement actions through peaceful protests. But destroying property and other unlawful activities only create further disruptions to businesses and potential harm to fellow Angelenos, our vibrant communities, and our economy.
Proudly, our organization has worked closely with Senator Alex Padilla throughout his impressive career. We are appalled by federal agents’ recent unwarranted rough treatment of Senator Padilla, a tireless advocate and leader for all Californians.
The government’s actions in L.A. are undermining our business environment at a time when incentivizing investment in our economy is vital. We remain committed to working alongside civic, business, and community leaders to ensure L.A. remains a resilient and welcoming city where everyone has the opportunity to contribute and succeed. And we urge Washington to enact immigration reform that ensures both our national security and our legacy as an exceptional nation built and continually enriched by citizens from around the world.
